Joan Eleanor Johnson, 74 WINDHAM -- Joan Eleanor Johnson, 74, of Albion Road, died on April 13, 2014, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on Aug. 9, 1939, she was the daughter of Elliot M. and Eleanor M. (Doughty) Lunt. She was raised and educated in South Portland and was a 1957 graduate of South Portland High School. Joan was also a graduate of the former Gorham State Teachers College in 1961 as well as a graduate of The University of Maine, Orono in 1972 with a master's degree in Library Science. Joan taught school in Richmond, Casco and Windham before becoming a Librarian at the Windham Junior High School, a position she held from 1967 until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of the Windham and National Education Associations, and a member of the Maine Media Education Association. She was a long-time member of the South Portland Nazarene Church and recently attended the Advent Christian Church in Windham Her interests included reading, golf and bowling. She was a participant in the Tuesday Night Women's Bowling League and was a member of the Twin Falls Women's Golf League. Joan loved to spend time at the family camp in Rangeley, snowmobiling and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, John E. Johnson of Windham; one daughter, Jeanne Swartz and her husband Steven of Haverhill, Mass.; two sisters, Carol MacVane of Gorham, and Janet Lunt of Windham; one sister-in-law, Sylvia M. Wheeler Johnson of Windham; two granddaughters, Stacy and Christy Swartz; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents. There are no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham. Burial will be in the family lot at Chase Cemetery, Windham.
