She was born Feb 1943 in Cheyenne, WY to Malcolm and Ursalee Klingner, where her father was initially stationed during World War II. The family moved back to Malcolm's hometown of Springfield, while he was in the Pacific. She grew up in Springfield where she met and married Burns Derrough in 1963. They raised a family with 2 girls near Turners- a place they both loved. A local architect, Burns designed and built their home. She was actively involved with family, Girl Scouts, her love of animals, horseback riding, motorcycles and many charities. A main passion for her was the Ronald McDonald House where she served as the volunteer executive director during its inception & dedication. After Burns' death, she was fortunate to marry another wonderful man, Robert N. Smith and spent the next 26 yrs with him. They enjoyed the country, the lake, traveling and especially enjoyed their family and many friends. Joanie was preceded in death by her parents and recently her husband Robert. She is survived by her daughters & their families: Dr. Shelly Derrough & Dr. David Randall; Dr. John, Jennifer and Julia Essman. Her Brother & his family: Dr. George & Sharan Klingner. Her loss is mourned by Burns' family; Robert's wonderful children and their families; as well as many friends- especially Cynthia Todd and Judy Wilson. A memorial service shall be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield on Monday, Aug. 26 at 3:00 PM. Following this, there will be a reception at the church.
