->GRIFFIN, Ga. -- Joan Burgess Smith, 83, of Griffin passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2009.Joan was born in Waterville, Maine, on Sept. 24, 1925, to the late Howard O. Burgess and the late Mildred Cook Burgess. Joan graduated from Cony High School in Augusta, Maine, in 1944, and from Boston University's School of Journalism in 1948. Joan had lived in Florida for many years, where she was the director of a vocational school in Melbourne Beach, and later retired in Griffin. She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting landscapes and seascapes. Joan loved dogs and was expert in their care.She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Alan C. and Mary Burgess, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and their four children, Peter Burgess, of Massachusetts, Ellen Colby Burgess, of Colorado, Briley Burgess Smith, of Missouri, and Jack Burgess, of Maine; and three nieces, daughters of her late sister, Briley Burgess Clark: Alison Johnson, Leslie Pech and Andrea Riekena, all of California.A memorial services will take place at a later date.
