BEGG, Joan Ruth Wilford (Hawkes)June 2, 1920 - February 6, 2012It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and nana, Joan Begg. Joan was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Stuart in 1996. She is survived by her son, Graham and wife, Eunice Begg of Saskatoon, their two daughters, Adrianne and Kristen and her daughter, Margaret and husband, Leon Marciak of Sherwood Park and their two daughters, Andrea and Lisa.Joan was raised and educated in Redhill and Reigate, Surrey, England. At age 18, Joan joined the civil service and trained in London as a telephone operator. During WWII, Joan trained Signalman Stuart Begg of the Canadian Army Signal Corp. At the height of the blitz, July 19, 1941 Joan and Stuart were married. In August 1943, Joan was very proud to join the Canadian Women's Army Corp and for the next two years worked at Canadian Military Headquarters in London. Joan arrived in Canada, January 1945, and traveled to Stuart's hometown of Calgary, Alberta. In 1946, Stuart and Joan moved to Edmonton, where they raised their family. From 1965 to 1984, Joan worked at the Cameron Library, University of Alberta, where she developed many lifelong friendships.Joan and Stuart travelled extensively throughout the world. They enjoyed meeting people and developing friendships that they maintained through correspondence over many years. Joan and Stuart kept everyone updated on family news and their travels, by publishing their Christmas Rambles for 48 consecutive years.Joan will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her love of gardening, and outdoor hikes in search of wildflowers.A special thank you goes to the staff of Rosedale Estates, where Joan resided for three years and to the staff of the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Center for their care of Joan over the past six months.A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Hainstocks Funeral Home, 9810 - 34 Avenue, Edmonton.
