Joan H. Anderson of Croton-on-Hudson died April 30, 2002 of progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder, at Bethel Nursing Home in Ossining. She was born Joan Mary Hempel on March 6, 1923 in Rochester. She graduated from St. Joseph's College for Women. She worked as a computer programmer and administrative assistant. After moving to Croton in 1960, she served as a Democratic district leader, an officer of the League of Women Voters and chairperson of the Village Beautification Committee. She was a hostess for foreign students, tennis player, pianist, gardener, seamstress, bridge player, traveler and gourmet cook. She sang in the church choir and other choral groups, volunteered in Croton schools and was a leader in Girl Scouts and 4H Club. Her landscape paintings have appeared for many years at the Unitarian Fellowship's annual art exhibit. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Charles H. Anderson, son Mark with his wife Susan and grandchildren Megan and Brugger of Carmel, daughter Mary of Baltimore, sister Barbara Doyle of Canandaigua and many loving relatives and friends. She earlier lost her brother Thomas Hempel and sister Geraldine Taillie. A memorial Mass will celebrate her life at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton on Saturday, June 1, at 11 am followed by a reception there. Contributions in her memory may be made to Society for PSP, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208, or to a favorite charity.
