JoAnn Messinger Smith, age 80, of Florence, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family that loved her so.JoAnn was born in LaPorte, Ind., and grew up in South Bend, Ind., where she graduated from St. Mary's Academy. She attended Indiana University and was a lifelong fan of Hoosiers sports. She was later employed by Bendix, where she met the man she would marry and return to Florence with. JoAnn was a faithful member of North Wood United Methodist Church for 50 years and also was a member of the Goodwill club and UMW. She was retired from TVA Browns Ferry. During her retirement, she loved traveling, gardening, reading, her dogs, sitting on her patio and being a loving grandmother. She was always very involved in the lives of her children, and was truly our "rock." She was always there for us and will be missed more than any words can express. We will always be inspired by her courage, faith and strength.JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ruby Messinger, of South Bend, Ind.; and by her husband, James Howard Smith, of Florence, a World War II veteran.JoAnn is survived by her son, Jeffery Wayne Smith and wife, Cheryl Starkey Smith, of Cottondale, Ala.; her daughter, Randi Smith Phillips and her husband, David Phillips of Orange Beach, Ala.; her grandsons, James Evan Smith and Nelson Alexander Smith, both of Cottondale, Ala.; and her step-granddaughter, Michelle Phillips.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday June 22, 2010, at North Wood United Methodist Church of Florence, with the Rev. Peter Hawker officiating. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on that day from noon tp 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary.Pallbearers will be Evan Smith, Alexander Smith, David Phillips, Gary Smith, Greg Sharp and Chris Connolly.The family would like to give a special thanks to Amedisys Hospice, of Tuscaloosa, and her North Wood church family for their care and friendship.You are invited to sign the online register at elkinsfh.com.
