SMITH, DR. JEWELL E., Founder and Pastor of Temple Baptist Church/Orlando Baptist Church, went to be with the Lord on June 6, 2004. Pastor Smith was born in Graves County, Kentucky on April 1, 1928 and lived there until the age of 18. He served in the U.S. Military from 1946 to 1950. On completion of his military commitment he moved to Detroit, Michigan to work and be near his sister, Jane. On January 1, 1951 (the first day of the last half of the twentieth century) his sister introduced him to Dr. Wendell Correll. This meeting changed his life forever as Dr. Correll opened his Bible and introduced him to his Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr. Correll became his lifelong friend and mentor. Within five months of this meeting he enrolled in the Baptist Bible College, in Springfield, Missouri from which he graduated 1954. During his college years he founded Oxbow Lake Baptist Church, White Lake Michigan. He pastored the Burton Baptist Church/Twin Cities Baptist Church, Flint Michigan from 1954 to 1957. In 1957 he and his family moved to Orlando, Florida where he established the Temple Baptist Church, 500 S. Semoran Blvd., Orlando. After serving the church for 27 years he retired from the ministry of this church to do full time evangelism. For the better part of the last 20 years he has traveled extensively lecturing on the history of the Bible. His travels have taken him to every state in the U.S. and to many countries around the world. While we as a family will be forever saddened at his homegoing we can rejoice in the Lord for the Scripture tells us that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." His birth family, father, Kelsey Smith; mother, Ella LaRue Smith; brother, Ned Smith; and sister, Carolyn Jane Smith have all preceded him in death. He leaves his immediate family, his wife; Sara Elizabeth; four children, David Alan Smith, Stephen Mark Smith, Cyndee Denise Sams, and Lisa Christine Ard. He has ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. For many years during his ministry in Orlando he ministered via daily radio broadcasts on three different radio stations. For an extended period of time he also served and ministered every Sunday morning at the Marine Reserve base in Orlando. He was known for his hospital visitation and for knocking on doors, inviting people to church and winning them to Christ. During his many years of ministry he traveled to countless mission fields around the globe. We will miss him deeply. Viewing will be held from 4-7PM, Thursday, June 10, in the main Sanctuary of Orlando Baptist Church, 500 S. Semoran Blvd., Orlando. The funeral service will be held at 7PM, Thursday, June 10 at Orlando Baptist Church. Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Road, Orlando, FL 32822. 407-277-4227.
