TUNBRIDGE - Jessie W. Tucker, 83, died Monday, May 23, 2011, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Tunbridge, the daughter of Percy H. and Bessie (Farnham) Welch. She attended school in Tunbridge and later South Royalton, where she graduated in 1946 from South Royalton High School. On July 28, 1949, she married Robert H. Tucker, of Tunbridge. They lived all their married life on the Tucker dairy farm just south of Tunbridge village. Robert died Aug. 19, 1985. Following graduation she worked a few years at Vermont Life and later Bay State Creamery in Tunbridge and Chelsea. During this time she also worked part time for the U.S. Postal Service, which later became her full-time job as the Chelsea postmaster. Jessie retired in 1991 from the postal service and went to work at Welch's Hardware Store in South Royalton for five years. In 1992, she was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. All through her working life and illness she always worked on her family's dairy farm, doing chores and tirelessly taking care of the farm that meant so much to her. She was a member of the Tunbridge Congregational Church, Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2571 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 26, both of White River Junction, the National Association of Postmasters and the Rising Sun Lodge Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star of South Royalton. She enjoyed her farm, mowing the lawn, cross-country skiing, gardening, snowshoeing and puzzles in the winter. She is survived by a son, Benjamin Tucker, of Dyberry, Pa.; two daughters, Judith Tucker, of Wollaston, Mass., and Marilyn Lyford, of Chelsea; two grandchildren, Robert and Serena Tucker; one great-granddaughter, Alex Braley; three sisters, Gladys Tuller and Kathleen Welch, both of Tunbridge, and Agnes Allen, of Chelsea; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Tucker, and three brothers, Donald Welch, David Welch and Stanley Welch. There are no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Tunbridge Congregational Church in Tunbridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03765 or the Tunbridge Church, c/o T. Swayze, Treasurer, 56 Swayze Road, Tunbridge, VT 05077. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea is in charge of arrangements.
