->BENTON -- Jessie P. Carter of Bridge Street, Benton, died at home Tuesday, May 23, 2006, with her family at her side following a long, courageous battle with cancer.She was born in Bridgton on Aug. 29, 1942, the daughter of Ralph and Arlene (Richardson) Norton. In 1943 they moved to Chelmsford, Mass., until 1952 when they returned to Maine and settled Livermore Falls, where she attended school.Jessie worked as a certified nurse's assistant for many years at Pleasant Hill Nursing Home before working at C & W Aquarium with her soul mate.On March 15, 1991, she married her soul mate, R. Z. Carter, whom she loved deeply. She loved weekend camping and playing cards. She enjoyed attending lawn sales on the weekends during the summer months. She also loved going for Sunday afternoon rides. She especially loved having her grandchildren around, and they all loved their Mimi. Her favorite place to be was the Shawmut Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir.Jessie is survived by her husband, Zeke Carter of Benton; three daughters, Kim Pendelton of Pittsfield, Ann Maberry of Benton, and Kelly Breton of Virginia: one son, Richard Maberry Jr. of Benton; two stepdaughters, Sylvia Hammond and Cheryl Evans, both of Florida; one stepson, Wesley Carter of Florida; her mother, Arlene Zabierek of Lewiston; one brother, Gordon Norton and his wife, Gloria, of Wilton; two sisters, Nancy Kelley and her husband, Wendall, of Lewiston, and Carol Pillsbury of Farmington: five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren, who are all very close to her heart.She will sadly be missed by all, but never forgotten in our hearts. She will stay forever the mother, daughter, wife, sister, and friend.MOMWhen I must leave you for a whilePlease do not grieve and shed wild tearsAnd hug your sorrow to you through the yearsBut start our bravely with a gallant smile;And for my sake and in my nameLive on and do all the things the sameFeed not your loneliness on empty daysBut fill each waking hour in useful waysReach out your hand in comfort and hold me dearAnd I in turn will comfort you and hold you nearNever, never be afraid to dieFor I am waiting for you in the skyVisitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Shawmut Chapel in Shawmut.
