Jessie Elizabeth Gainer Johnson, of Florence, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2007. She was born March 8, 1919, in Scottsboro, Ala. The service will be Saturday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. at College View Church of Christ, with Mark White officiating. Burial will follow at Florence City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 10, from 1-3 p.m. at the church.Elizabeth was a 1936 graduate of Coffee High School. She attended the University of North Alabama, where she earned a B.A. in library science. She also attended Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, where she earned her Masters degree in library science. She was a librarian at Northwest-Shoals Community College until her retirement. Mrs. Johnson was a long-time member of College View Church of Christ. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sons, Leslie G. Johnson and wife, Jane, of Killen, Ala., Jimmy Johnson and wife, Gail, of Florence, Ala.; grandchildren, Rachel J. Cobia, Northport, Ala., Elizabeth I. Johnson, Birmingham, Nathan W. Johnson, Birmingham, Leslie G. Johnson II, Atlanta, Ga., Rustin B. Johnson, who is overseas serving in the Peace Corps., Warren F. Johnson, Oxford, Miss., Katie J. Mitchell, Florence, Andrew C. Johnson, Charlotte, N.C., David E. Johnson, Florence, Jessica E. Johnson, Florence; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Gainer Gross, of Florence, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Margaret Johnson, of Birmingham, Ala.; and sister-in-law, Margie Gainer, Knoxville, Tenn.She was preceded in death by her parents, J.M. and Will Gainer; husband, William Warren Johnson III; son William Warren Johnson IV; granddaughters, Jean Elizabeth Johnson and Rebecca Ellen Johnson; and brother, Jerry Gainer.Pallbearers will be family and friends.The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Glenwood Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center for the loving care and compassion shown to their mom.If you wish, expressions of sympathy may be made in loving memory of Elizabeth Johnson to the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
