-><!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Bishop, Jeffry DavidJeffry David Bishop, born in New York City on June 29, 1944 died April 4, 2015. A psychologist, psychotherapist, and human ecologist, he received his Doctorate from Cornell University in 1974. After teaching at SUC Cortland and Ithaca College as well as maintaining a private practice of psychotherapy, he received a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley to study new religious movements. Returning to Ithaca, he spent twenty years between 1980 and 2006 working with some of the most difficult and dangerous youth in New York State, mostly those incarcerated in the youth facilities in Tompkins County. Between 2006 and 2011, he was a volunteer instructor at Lifelong, a Senior Center in Ithaca, providing classes and workshops on Latelife, Nutrition, Self-Protective Living, and other topics. His philosophy was transformed by historical events and personal experiences. Beginning as a humanistic Jew, after some nonconformist years in the early 1960s, he arrived in Ithaca in 1967 where he became a feminist, a wellness advocate, and ultimately a proponent of responsible self-reliant realism. After a career focusing on adolescence, he ultimately shifted to studying the concept of the final stage of latelife, a period that he named "Elderescence," which he elucidated by the posthumous publication of his books: "Bishop Identity Clarification Inventory", "Latelife Difficulties", "Self-Protective Living", "Responsible Self-Reliant Existentialism", and "Elderescence: Becoming an Elder, Being an Elder". He is survived by two principal people: his wife, partner, best friend, and constant companion, Patricia Pesoli-Bishop of Ithaca, to whom all of his work is dedicated and by whom many ideas were inspired, evoked, improved or refined and by his son, Tristan David Bishop, born in Ithaca on April 18, 1969, whose potential and its fulfillment became a source of great satisfaction to him. Many others, whose relationships were important whether long-term or transitory, helped sustain and encourage Dr. Bishop's efforts to make meaningful contributions to the progressive development of human awareness and the cultivation of ethical relationships and principled responsibility. Their friendship collaboration, and caring were always greatly appreciated. There will be no calling hours, services, or memorials. In lieu of flowers, you may honor Jeff by donating to the organization of your choice. Bangs Funeral Home will be assisting the family.
