Covington - Jeanne M. Smith, age 84, of Covington, Ga., passed away on December 13, 2008. She died of complications from heart surgery.Born on September 11, 1924 in Batavia, Ill., she was the youngest of four and the only daughter to Mae and Ward Robertson. Jeanne had three brothers named Gerald, Wallace and Richard. Jeanne is predeceased by her husband, Hampton Smith (1920 ñ 1969) and her daughter, Melinda Eudy (1952 ñ 1994). Jeanne is survived by children, Wade and Delores Smith of Greer, S.C., Duane and Pam Smith of Bogart, Ga., Rod and Jane Smith of Duluth, Ga. and Dan Eudy of West Hartford, Conn. She has eight grandchildren, Caroline Eudy, Hampton Smith, Catherine Eudy, Meredith Eudy, Zachary Smith, Mitchell Smith, Grace Smith and Luke Smith. Jeanne has one great-grandchild named Nolan and numerous friends and extended family throughout the country.She attended the University of Illinois and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in English. She married Hampton Smith on June 9, 1951 in Illinois. They lived in many parts of the country as Hampton pursued a career as an Analytical Chemist. Their residences included Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Savannah, Atlanta and Covington. She resided in Covington for the past 40 years.Jeanne had several careers, including English Professor, Real Estate Agent and worked for many years at the Covington News as the Advertising Manager. She also wrote many articles for the paper. She was an active reader and writer and had several works published in magazines and greeting cards. She was an active member and former elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Covington, the Covington Garden Club, Covington Women's Club, Bridge Clubs, Seniors Bingo and served on the Covington Library Board.Her wish was to be cremated. The family requests that instead of flowers, donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Covington or her favorite charity, The Salvation Army, in her memory. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Covington community for their support and friendship to their Mother. "Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art...
