Jeanette S. Smith, 72, of Panama City, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Bay Medical Center of pneumonia and other complications following a stroke she had suffered in April. Jeannie was born on Jan. 14, 1939, and adopted by Guida and Morton Smith of Philadelphia, PA. She attended the Baldwin School for Girls and Vassar College. She ultimately graduated from Cornell University, where she also began her 53 year marriage to W. Kirk Smith.Jeannie relished the role of wife and mother, creating a home built on unconditional love and support for her husband, her two boys and her two girls. "Mom's Van" (which later became "Mom's Dooly") was a fixture at innumerable school sporting events, dog shows, horse shows and recitals during the over three decades she had school aged children Her true passion was her love of animals of every variety. She served as a board member and volunteer for numerous Humane Societies, providing temporary housing for literally hundreds of homeless animals over the years. She and Kirk also raised dozens of Irish Wolfhounds, including many champions, and several horses. The more exotic family pets included an injured vulture, a skunk, and an anteater.Jeannette is survived by husband Kirk, sons Russell with wife Rebecca and Brian with wife Melissa and children Justin and Jessica, and daughters Kim and Brooke.In lieu of a formal service or the sending of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to honor Jeannie's life go to their local humane society and adopt a pet, volunteer, or make a donation.
