-><!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Anderson, Jean McLaughlinJean McLaughlin Anderson, widow of Cornell University emeritus professor John Maxwell Anderson, died peacefully at Hospicare on August 20, 2014. She was 93 years old and had been a resident of Longview for the past nine years. Jean was born in New York City to Edward John and Ellen Reilly McLaughlin on May 11, 1921. She grew up in White Plains, NY. A World War II veteran, Jean served in the US Navy WAVES at Jacksonville Naval Air Station where she met her husband. They were married at Jacksonville NAS in 1944 and shared 67 years of marriage. Jean remained proud of her service and was a member of Women in Military Service to America. Jean arrived in Ithaca in 1952 when her husband accepted a faculty position at Cornell. She was an active faculty wife and also served her community. She was a Cub Scout leader, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Gadabout, as well as a CO-OP shopper in the 1950s. She worked part-time at the Cornell Campus Store. Jean is remembered for her contributions in the early years of the Shoals Marine Laboratory on the Isles of Shoals in the Gulf of Maine, where her husband was a founding faculty member. A long-term parishioner at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Jean was a member of the Altar Guild. In recent years, she participated in many activities at Longview including the Kazoo Band and the Intergenerational Choir. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends. Jean is survived by her three sons, John (Ruth), Stephen (Anne) and Christopher (Eileen); five grandchildren, Erin (Kevin), Jennifer (Gregory), Daniel (Chelsie), Jeffrey and Ian; and one great-grandson, Maxwell. A service for Jean will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ithaca on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. The family respectfully invites Jean's friends to attend the service. The church will be open at 1:30 p.m. for those who wish to greet the family before the service. A reception and celebration of Jean's life will be held at Longview immediately following the service. Private interment will take place in October at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Jean may be sent to Hospicare and Palliative Care Services of Tompkins County. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
