Jean-Hagen Smith, née en 1921, conjointe de William-H. Smith, fille de Roscoe et Louise, mère de Sharon Smith, Jr, William H et Barbara, est décédée le 20 décembre 2011 à l'âge de 90 ans.
Jean Hagen Smith Jean Hagen Smith passed away on December 20, 2011, at the age of 90. She was born in Rochester, NY to Roscoe and Louise Hagen. She attended Columbia School and Smith College. While at college, she met William H. Smith, whom she married in 1943. She completed her college education, which was interrupted by World War II and family demands, at St. John Fisher College in the 1970s. Always active in her community, Jean supported Planned Parenthood, Junior League, League of Women Voters, Smith Club, Rochester Museum and Science Center, and various other organizations. She was a member of the Chatterbox Club and the Country Club of Rochester. Her greatest interest was Planned Parenthood, where she volunteered from 1938, during high school, and where she was one of three members who started the Rape Crisis Service. She was director of the Rape Crisis Service from 1973-1975. Jean was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, William H. Smith; infant daughter, Barbara Jean; and her dear sister, Joyce Hagen Macy. She is survived by three sons, William H. Smith, Jr. (Jean Douglas), David A. Smith (Mary Mulvehill) and Thomas W. Smith (Frances Miller); one daughter, Sharon Smith Burlingame (Westcott Burlingame); as well as nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was a loving mother and educator who encouraged individuality, independence, and nurturing in her children and students. Gifts in her memory may be made to Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region, Smith College, or the Rochester Museum and Science Center. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
