HYATT, Jean CatherineAged 81, died peacefully at Victoria, BC, on April 21, 2012. Predeceased by her husband Glen, Jean will be sadly missed by her son and daughter-in- law Geoffrey and Susan Hyatt, her daughter Catherine Taggart, her three grandsons Kieran Hyatt, Dustin Taggart and Liam Hyatt, and her siblings Megan Balmer, Windsor Thomas and Janet Williams. She was predeceased by her sister Gwynneth Preece. Born in Mussoorie, India, Jean attended school in Rajasthan and lived in London, England before immigrating to Canada in 1953. For over 40 years, Jean was a long-standing volunteer contributor in British Columbia, particularly in the area of child welfare. Jean was president of the Children's Aid Society in Vancouver from 1969 to 1971, after continuous service since 1957. She served on the Child Welfare Advisory Committee of the Vancouver Foundation from 1975 to 1984, and was a Founding Trustee of the Family Services Foundation of Vancouver. Jean was a Founding Member of the Canadian Council for Children and Youth (Toronto, ON) in 1980 and 1981. She was a Board Member of the Child Welfare League of America (New York, NY) from 1971 to 1976. Jean also made a substantial contribution to the Arts in BC. From 1960, she was an active advocate and supporter of ballet in BC. She was a member of the Vancouver Sculpture Society for Expo in 1986, and was a Governor of the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation from 1977 to 1986. In historical and cultural preservation, Jean was the Founding President of Roedde House Preservation Society, which opened the Roedde House Museum in Vancouver during her tenure. She also served the Vancouver Museums and Planetarium Association from 1968 to 1975 in various capacities, and was a founding Trustee of the Vancouver Museum Foundation. In the field of education, Jean volunteered for the Universities Council of BC, the Academic Council of BC and the Vancouver Community College Education Foundation. But aside from all of that, Jean was kind, generous, loyal and gracious. She loved her family, her friends, her dogs and her home. Her favourite thing was to host gatherings, which were always elegant and welcoming, at her home. Special thanks to those who made Jean smile so often in her later years, particularly at The Kiwanis Pavilion. A Celebration of Life will be held at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider doing something kind for someone in need. That's what Jean would have done.
