ROCHESTER — Janice "Jan" Cooper Adams, co-director of Camp Idlepines for Girls in Strafford, passed away on August 29, 2012, after a long illness.Jan was born in Rochester, on April 5, 1926, to Burt Randall and Lillian Foss Cooper. She graduated from Spaulding High School in 1943. She was a 1945 graduate of Colby Junior College, attended Bouve Boston School, and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1947.Jan and her husband Dick raised their three girls in Cranford, N.J., and Wilton, Conn., where she was a substitute school teacher, Sunday school teacher, a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, and an active PTA member. After Dick's retirement from Exxon in 1982, they divided their time between Strafford, and Winter Springs, Fla., and later, between Strafford and Concord. She and Dick loved golfing, traveling with friends, and their days on Bow Lake.Jan and her sister, Jane, were co-directors of Camp Idlepines for Girls on Bow Lake from 1954 through 1982, and then Idlepines Day Camp through 1985. Together they were known as "Aunt Jan" and "Aunt Jane" to more than 1,370 Idlepines alumni from around the world. Jan was a distinguished member of the New England Camping Association and in 1968 served on the leadership team that hosted the first Camp Director Certification Institute, developing a model that now serves as the standard for the development and education of camp directors who belong to the American Camping Association (ACA). Jan received ACA's prestigious National Honor Award in 1980 for her work as the National Leadership Chairperson, Coordinator of the Camp Director Certification Institute, and Dean of the Camp Director Institute.Jan was a devout Christian and was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Cranford, the Wilton Congregational Church in Wilton, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Darien, the New Covenant Church in Winter Springs, and the Free Will Baptist Church in Bow Lake, Strafford. Janice is predeceased by her brother, Richard Foss Cooper, and her sister, Barbara Cooper Thompson Cogswell.She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard O. Adams, of Concord and Strafford; her three daughters, Jennifer Adams of Keene, Susan Swann and her husband Allen of Casselberry, Fla., Deborah Johnston and her husband Fred of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Cooper Fall of Rochester; and 12 nieces and nephews.
