SUDBURY, Mass. - Janet Hunter Smith, 90, died Jan. 14, 2012, at her home. She was born Jan. 11, 1922, in Proctor, Vt., the daughter of Claude I. and Elizabeth Hunter. She graduated in 1939 from St. Agnes School in Albany, N.Y., and in 1943 from Wheaton College. Mrs. Smith worked in Washington, D.C., for the National Security Agency. In 1945, she joined the American Red Cross and was staff assistant at the Red Cross Club for American soldiers in Compiegne, France. After earning a M.S. in Library Science in Montreal, she was the librarian for 10 years at Goodnow Library in Sudbury, Vt. She was a member of the Sudbury Opera and Oriental Rug Societies and she enjoyed traveling. Survivors include four sons, David of New Canaan, Conn., Quentin of Kalamazoo, Mich., Stansfield of Chicago and Nathanial of Needham, Mass.; four grandsons and six granddaughters; and a sister, Nancy of Proctor, Vt. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard P. Smith, whom she married in 1948; and by a brother, David, in 1942. The private memorial service will be held at a later date in Proctor, Vt.
