Jane Sloan Lyon 1920 - 2009 - SAVANNAH - Savannah artist, Mrs. Jane Sloan Lyon, died on October 11, 2009. Mrs. Lyon was a native of Savannah, born in Telfair Women's Hospital November 4, 1920, the daughter of Rev. Pearson Hill Sloan and Jewel Varnedoe Sloan. Shortly after her birth, Jane moved with her parents to Montevideo, Uruguay where her father, at that time a civil engineer, worked on hyrdo-electric projects. For the next 40 years relocation with her parents and then her husband was a frequent aspect of her life. She became and enthusiastic traveler. Her teen and college years found Jane in Virginia where her father, now a minister in the Episcopal Church, held several parishes. She was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Fine Arts. During the Second World War, she contributed to the war effort as a draftsman at the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Virginia. Jane Sloan married Lt. James Brooks Lyon of Ithaca, NY on February 13, 1943. Her husband's military career included a stay in post-war Japan where Jane became intensely interested in and influenced by Japanese Art. In 1960, the Lyon family moved permanently to Savannah. Mrs. Lyon pursued her arts career and enjoyed considerable success as a painter, printmaker, and photographer. She was a long-time member of the Savannah Art Association and a founding member of Gallery 209 where she participated for over 20 years. Mrs. Lyon resided in Ardsley Park for 45 years. The poster for the annual Ardsley Park Home and Garden Tour carries her drawing of the entrance to Ardsley Park. For the 1996 Olympics, Mrs. Lyon produced an official poster for the sailing competition held in Savannah. She was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where there are several stain-glass windows which she designed. Jane had a good eye for composition and quirky sense of how reality can be reinterpreted. She was never discouraged by critical comment directed at her work. Friends of her youth say that she was always fashion forward and simply fun to be with. She never lost her sense of style dressing herself. Her children report that she exercised unique vision composing her domestic environment by doing such things as covering the dining room chairs with snake skin upholstery, remodeling department store manikins in an unconventional manner and displaying them in her home alongside ancestral portraits. Somehow, it all went together. Her children remember Jane as a thoughtful mother, generous to her children, interested in their lives yet never interfering. She was open and nonjudgmental, accepting all manner of people with whom she came into contact. She loved lively conversation and never let fact get in the way of a good story. Mrs. Lyon was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her son, Lt. Colonel James Hill Lyon, of Sherman Oaks, CA; her daughter, Caroline Lyon Kastner of Westport, MA; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A funeral service is planned at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Isle of Hope, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16 followed by a private internment at Beaufort National Cemetery. Visiting hours at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel are 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15.
