Jane Stuart Kines, 68 Jane Christine Stuart Kines, a respected nurse, midwife, educator, journalist and media and church activist, died suddenly in a motor vehicle accident Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003. She was 68. A resident of Wild Goose Harbour between Johnstown and Cardinal, Jane Stuart was born July 15, 1934 in Preston, Lancashire, England. She came to Canada in 1975, and moved to this area in 1996. She was an accomplished and devoted gardener, photographer and seamstress. Jane Stuart was the loving wife and partner of Wayne Kines; beloved mother of Robin Stuart (and Kathy) of Morinville, Alberta, and Helena Ziegler (and Philip) of Bedford, Nova Scotia, as well as grandmother of Samantha, Nicole, Christopher and Michaela Stuart and Karl and Daniel Ziegler and Godmother of Alexandra Duckworth. She is also survived by her sister, Wendy Stuart-Murphy of Chorley, Lancashire, U.K. She will also be remembered by her husband's children and their families: David and Teresa of Toronto; Peter, Vibeke, Nicholas and Isabel of Denmark, Andrew and Rhonda of Toronto, and Stephen, Iva, Sabina and Simon of the Czech Republic. Jane Stuart began her communications management training and then nursing education in London, England in the 1950s, later moving to East Africa where she spent 20 years as district health nurse and midwife, media correspondent, photographer and editor. She is the founder of a model family life training centre in East Africa, and of a primary health care initiative in 25 communities of Central America. In 1971, she co-ordinated the entire East African famine relief campaign with the Kenya Red Cross Society and on behalf of the government of Kenya. She is past district governor of Toastmaster International's District 61, which she led to fifth place in the world in 1992-93. She was the executive secretary for the Media Club of Ottawa, and for three years, organized the Ottawa Exam Centre at the University of Ottawa on behalf of the Medical Council of Canada. Jane Stuart was a co-founder of Westman Media Co-operative Ltd. and of the World Media Institute, as well as editor of the Institute's international tabloid Tribute. An active member of the Anglican Diocese of Ontario, Jane Stuart served on the lay readers' association and as editor of its newsletter. She was a key organizer of a diocesan lay readers' summer school in 2002, and served as a lay reader in the parishes of Cardinal and Crystal Rock. She served on the diocesan Long Range Planning Committee and was a member of Synod Council, as well as having filled the role of chair of the Regional Assembly of Leeds-Grenville from its inception until 2002. She was on the vestry council, active in the Anglican Church Women and served as a lay representative to Synod. A celebration of her life took place Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 at St. John's Anglican Church, Prescott. The service was led by Rev. Doug Hayman, of her home church, St. Paul's Anglican in Cardinal, and he was assisted by Rev. Michael Pollesel. Rev. Dr. Tom Wilson and Bishop George Bruce. Her children, Helena and Robin, spoke at the gathering. Her sister, Wendy Stuart-Murphy, travelled from England to attend the funeral. A lunch provided by the ACW followed in the church hall. A memorial service will take place Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 am at St. John's Anglican Church, Elgin and Somerset, Ottawa. Other memorial services are to be held in Roblin, Manitoba and Lancashire, England. Donations in her memory may be sent to the Jane Stuart Project for global development and education, Anglican Diocese of Ontario, 90 Johnson St., Kingston, Ont., K7L 1X7.
