JAMES WILLIAM HALE GETTYSBURG, PA James William Hale, 71, died March 19, 2010 in Gettysburg, PA. He was born August 11, 1938 in Ashland, KY, to Chandler and Erma Lee (Clifton) Hale, who preceded him in death, as did his sister, Carol (Hale) Wright. He served in the Army in Germany, in Texas, and at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, where he was involved in missile maintenance. He attended Ashland Junior College and Indiana University Northwest, where he majored in sociology. He was a supervisor at Inland Steel in East Chicago, for more than 30 years in both steelmaking and coke production, winning many awards for inventions that improved efficiency. He lived in Northwest Indiana locations including Gary, Portage, East Chicago, and most recently Valparaiso. He was a hard worker who loved books and words, and taught those values to his sons. He is survived by son, James Clifton Hale; daughter-in-law, Dr. Susan Russell and grandson, Samuel of Gettysburg; son, Jonathan Allen Hale, daughter-in- law, Janet (Winandy) and grandchildren: Meagan and Aaron of Valparaiso; and son, Matthew Lee Hale and granddaughters: Sophia, Brigitte, and Ava of Prospect, KY. Also surviving are former wife, Barbara (Stone) Hale of Valparaiso; niece, Vicki (Wright) James of Ashland; nephew, Paul Wright of Tuscaloosa, AL, and several cousins. No services are planned. Burial is planned at Ashland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
