James Courtney White, 84, of 1129 Edwards Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, of complications to long-term illness. He was a devoted father, successful businessman, and a most typical member of the "Greatest Generation." Born in Gadsden, Ala., the only child of Hugh Hamilton and Mamie Irene Bumpous White, Mr. White came of age during the depression years, and started the lifelong attitudes of avoiding waste and championing neighborly assistance that were so common for Americans of the era. He was a member of the first graduating class of Chemical Engineering majors at the University of Alabama in 1942. He was married to Bettye Williams of Birmingham, another only child and fellow Alabama student, from Oct. 1, 1942, until her death, 50 years later in 1992. After getting married, like so many other young husbands, he went to war. Lieutenant White served in the Navy, in the Pacific, as a landing officer including campaigns on Peleliu and Leyte. He came home to his wife and newborn son with the confidence that they could accomplish anything they tried. He was employed at the American Locomotive Products Co., Beaumont, Texas Iron Works Div., Hudson Engineering, Houston, Texas, and the Union Carbide Nuclear, Oak Ridge, Tenn., National Laboratory. In 1952, this path led him to Greenville, S.C., and to the founding of his own manufacturing company, James C. White Co. He was a member of Eastlan Baptist Church and was married to fellow Eastlan Sunday School friend, Edna Kelly Bowen of Greenville from February 2000 to her death in December 2001. He was president of James C. White Co., Inc., which today remains a Greenville manufacturing firm and supplier to process industry nationwide and overseas. Mr. White considered his longtime devoted associates as part of his family. Surviving are two daughters, Ann White Taylor and her husband, A. Spencer, of Pilot, Va., and Bobbie White Marshall and her husband, Bill, of Ft. Worth, Texas; three sons, Thomas Courtney White and his wife, Verona, of Waxhaw, N.C., John Andrew White and his wife, Susan, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., and Stephen Hugh White and his wife, Sandy, of Easley, S.C.; five grandchildren, Todd White of Waxhaw, N.C., Courtney Lee White of Greenville, Christopher White of Easley, Drew White and Luke White of Rhinebeck, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastlan Baptist Church, 625 S. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC; or to Miracle Hill Ministries, 2419 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615. Services will be today, Dec. 9, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Eastlan Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family is at the residence of Steve White, 912 Cely Road, Easley, SC 29642. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.thomasmcafee.com.Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
