James Arthur Wheaton The death of James Arthur Wheaton, at the age of 81 years, formerly of Landis, SK and now living in Saskatoon, SK, occurred on September 13, 2008. The celebration of James' life will be held Friday, September 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Landis Community Complex. James is survived by his wonderful friend and companion, Virginia Beaubier; his daughter, Elaine Wheaton (Dale Young) and their children, Sean and Trent Wheaton Young; his daughter, Karen Mitzel (Cliff) and their children, Kristen and Kelsi; his daughterin-law, Valerie Wheaton and her sons, Brandon, Brock, Ryan and Riley. James is also survived by sisters, Margaret Carberry of Cochin, SK and Ida Geary of Vancouver, BC. James also has numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved and adored. James was predeceased by his father, Arthur; and his mother, Vern; his brothers, David and Donald; his sister, Gertrude; his wife, Edna; and his son, Erik. James was born on January 2, 1927 on the family homestead the SE1/4, 4-36-18 W3rd, the third child in a family of six. James began his education in 1933 at Porter School which was 3/4 of a mile walk north of the family farm. In 1941 he went to Bushville School four miles east of the farm. Dad worked and played on the family farm for many years until a hailstorm in 1943 ruined the crops and he had to go find his first job. This led him to Smiley, SK, where he helped a farmer with his harvest. Over the next several years he helped on the farm in the summer and spent winters working in several placed including a meat plant in Edmonton, a smelter in Trail, BC and logging camps in northern BC and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Dad married Edna Skog in 1951 and that same year they rented the Joe Yustin farm which became their own in 1956 and is where the Wheaton farm continues at the present. James was a member of the Landis Masonic Lodge for many years and then with the Biggar Masonic Lodge. he served all of the positions in the lodge. Of all things in life Dad loved to farm. Each spring he would joke that he had seeded Experimental Field #1 and each fall he would joke that he had left some of the gods. He taught all of his children the joy of farming and loved for the land and animals. Dad always had a story to tell. Over the years we all learned about logging in the Queen Charolottes; making copper and lead ingots at the smelter at Trail; farming in Saskatchewan; and the bull and bear markets. The death of his son, Erik in 2001 was a great blow to Dad, but with the optimism and hope that only a farmer can possess he was able to persevere and help his grandsons continue to farm. Dad sorely missed his only son and often spoke of him with fond memories. Dad's humor and incredible knowledge will be sadly missed by all. Memorial donations would be appreciated in lieu of flowers and may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. GRONDIN FUNERAL SERVICES of Biggar in care of arrangements.
