James W. Mackenzie, 81, Sun City, Hilton Head, S.C., and formerly of Port Charlotte, died Dec. 10, 2002. He was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Cleveland. He joined the Army in 1942. Relieved from active duty, he stayed with the active reserve program and retired as lieutenant colonel in military intelligence. After duty, he returned to work in the advertising department of Glidden Paint Co. in a commercial art capacity. He joined the Lakewood, Ohio, Police Department in 1952, and retired in 1979 as detective lieutenant. He completed training with Cleveland Police Academy, Keeler Polygraph Institute in Chicago, and graduated from the FBI National Academy with honors. He volunteered for 12 years in the Juvenile Arbitration and Teen Court Program in Charlotte County. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association (Army), the Retired Officers Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the FBI National Academy Associates. He was a member and an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Port Charlotte. Survivors include his wife, Doris; daughters Carol of Lakewood, Ohio, and Mary Brooking of Westbrook, Maine; stepson Dennis Shea of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren; and one step-grandson. Services were conducted at the Lakewood Park Cemetery in Rocky River, Ohio. A memorial service will be later. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory in Hilton Head Island, S.C., is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Okatie Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 15 Williams Drive, Okatie, SC 29909.
