OXFORD — James "Jim" Starr (WAYQLB) of Oxford, died Saturday, October 4, 2008 after a short illness. Mr. Starr served his country as an officer in the US Army for 22 years. He fought for our freedom in the Korean War and then again in Vietnam . He also served his community as a Ham Radio Operator. He was a volunteer weather watcher before the warning sirens were available, acting as the first line of communication when bad weather or a disaster occurred. Mr. Starr was instrumental in rescuing a driver of an 18 wheeler and reuniting his family from Texas following an accident on Interstate 20 at Christmas time. He was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, October 6, 2008, in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory with Bro. Paul Hunter and Harold Mooneyham officiating. Burial will follow with full Military honors at Dogwood Trails Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 till 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Starr is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Demris Starr; daughters, Pam Holt, Valarie Jordan and her husband, Wally and Sandy Sims; grandchildren' Lori Holt, Amanda Tucker, Bryan Tucker, Brandy Shears, Chris Blazer and Jesse Sims. Pallbearers will be Bryan Tucker, Jesse Sims, Wally Jordan, Donald Holt, Tommy Potterfield, Robert Lowery, John Williams and Mike Murray.
