James S. Carter PORTLAND - James S. Carter died at the Maine Medical Center, Portland, on March 18, 2006 from complications of emphysema. He was born in Chester, Pa., on June 26, 1934, a son of Philip L. and Gertrude W. Carter. His high school years were marked with success in academics, leadership and sports. He attended Bowdoin College, received a B.A. from Oberlin College and an M.A. from Swarthmore College. His wide-ranging interests spanned classical music and history to sports and politics. He suffered a lifelong struggle with mental illness. In his later years he returned to Brunswick, Maine where he enjoyed the support of friends and family. James is survived by two brothers, Philip L. of Princeton, Mass., and Stephen W. of Woodstock, Vt., their wives and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 15 Pleasant St., Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Fund.
