James Truman Roper, Retired Fire Chief, 77, husband of Louise Roper, died May 30, 2005.Born in Piedmont, S.C., he was a son of the late Claude Bolt and Eva McCoy Roper.Mr. Roper was a member of Laurel Baptist Church and the Steadfast Sunday School Class. He worked with the Greenville City Fire Department over 39 years, and served as Chief from 1981 until 1989. He was a member of Southeastern Fire Chief's Association, International Fire Chief's Association and the South Carolina State and Greenville County Fire Chief's Association. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sisters, Betty Roper Clardy of Williamston, S.C., and Nancy Roper Mizell of Dallas, Texas; and a brother, Horace Roper of Williamston, S.C.Graveside services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be the Steadfast Sunday School Class of Laurel Baptist Church and retired and active Firemen.Memorials may be made to the Renovation Fund of Laurel Baptist Church, 2331 Laurens Road, Greenville, SC 29607.The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
