SYLACAUGA - Mr. James Randall "Jim" Roper, born Nov. 24, 1940, passed away peacefully June 4, 2009, at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham. Jim never met a stranger and always had a warm heart and helping hand to give. His bright, beautiful smile will never fade. He bore a lengthy and difficult illness with incredible courage, patience, dignity and grace. He was joyously welcomed home by his late parents, Earl B. Roper and Lillian Allison Roper; brother, Harold D. (Buddy) Roper; and wife's parents, John M. Thomas and Charlsie Jeanette Thomas. He is survived by and forever loved and cherished by his wife, Charlsie Thomas Roper; sons, Matthew Earl Roper (Tammy) and David Randall Roper (Kendal); granddaughters, Reagan Nicole Roper and Kaitlin Reid Roper; grandson, Thomas Seth O'Neal; brother, Earl R. (Rudy) Roper and wife Gwen Roper; sister-in-law, Ruby Roper; brother-in-law John M. (Johnny) Thomas Jr.; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, retired from the UNISYS Corporation after 26 years, and drove a big rig for Crete Carrier Corporation for a number of years before retiring full time. He was a graduate of Rushing Springs Baptist Seminary and was a licensed Baptist minister. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church, and in years past, served as youth minister there. Jim loved his church family and thoroughly enjoyed working with the youth. Jim also took pride in being the Sylacauga High School Band Booster president. Services will be held Sunday, June 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Jim and Charlsie, through their love of animals, request memorial donations be made to your hometown animal shelter. An online registry is at www.mem.com.
