James R. StarrRetired Union Carpenter TEWKSBURY -- James R. "Jim" Starr, age 80, a resident of Tewksbury for over 60 years, passed away at home, with his family by his side, on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Joan J. (Aspell) Starr, with whom he celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 13, 2014. Born in Wilmington on December 25, 1933, he was the son of the late Arthur F. Starr and the late Mary (Savage) Starr. Jim was raised in Wilmington and attended Wilmington High School. In 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Johnston. He was honorably discharged from active duty on August 21, 1957 in Newport, RI. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for over 20 years as a Union Carpenter by Local # 111 (formerly local # 49). Jim was an active communicant and supporter of St. William's Parish, where he was a member of the former Holy Name Society, a 50 year member of the Men's Club, and served as an Usher for over 40 years. He enjoyed attending wood carving classes at the Tewksbury Senior Center, traveling with his wife throughout the United States and the Caribbean, and playing a round of golf. In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by two children, James T. Starr and his wife Pauline and Nancy M. Starr all of Tewksbury; two grandchildren, Garrett J. and Ian T. Starr; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Spaulding of Chelmsford, DeeDee Aspell of San Antonio, TX, and Gloria Aspell of Methuen; one brother-in-law, Thomas Aspell and his wife Maureen of Tewksbury; also many nieces and nephews. Jim was the brother of the late Mary Nicholson, Frances Brown, John and Arthur Starr. STARR -- James R. Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass on Saturday, August 23rd at 10 a.m., at St. William's Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Please meet at church. Interment services will follow at the Chapel at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Rd., Tewksbury. At Jim's request there are No Calling hours. Kindly Omit Flowers.
