James H. "Slip" Morris Merrillville James H. Morris "Slip", age 81, of Merrillville, IN passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2004. He was a retired employee of United States Steel Gary Works with 43 years service. He was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School, class of 1941. James was a noted athlete in Northwest Indiana playing on several championship basketball, baseball and fast-pitch softball teams. At age 16 he was offered a professional baseball contract with the then St. Louis Browns (Baltimore Orioles). He was a WWII Army Veteran serving with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. A member of VFW Hobart Post 5365. Jim was also a member of United Steel Workers Local 1014 where he served as Grievance Committeeman for 15 years. Preceded in death by daughter, Candee. Survived by wife of 57 years, Virginia; one daughter, Michele (Sven) Nylen of Coral Springs, FL; one son, Michael (Pam) Morris of Merrillville, IN; four grandchildren: Jamie Deiotte of Hobart, IN, Aimee Deiotte of Merrillville, IN, Sven Nylen IV and Bethany Nylen, both of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Wilk of Crown Point, IN and Nina Clary of River Rouge, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services Thursday, September 2, 2004 at11:30 a.m. from the Geisen Funeral Home 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN, Pastor G. C. Martin officiating. Burial, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. V.F.W. Memorial Service Wenesday evening, 7:30 P.M.
