James J. Cavanaugh WEYMOUTH Sgt. Maj James J. Cavanaugh USMC (ret) of Weymouth passed away Tuesday August 4, 2009. He was 85 years old. Born in Boston, he grew up in North Quincy and lived in Weymouth for 48 years. Beloved husband of 58 years to the late Margaret (Gordon). Wonderful and loving Father of Peggy ONeil and her husband Michael of Scituate, Kathleen Lundgren and her husband Kenneth of Pembroke, Virginia Mullin and her husband Robert of Salem, NH, James J. III of Weymouth, and Carolyn Schneiderhan and her husband William of Duxbury. Proud Papa of Christopher Mullin, Nicholas ONeil, Lauren, Matthew and Lucas Schneiderhan. Dearest and devoted friend of 62 years to Frank Riley of Milton. Dear brother of the late Leo P. Cavanaugh of Hingham and the late Eleanor Murphy of Weymouth. Brother-in-law of Kathleen Cavanaugh of Hingham and Frank Sproule of NH. Brother-in-law of the late Jean Sproule of NH and the late John Murphy of Weymouth. Beloved Uncle Jimmie to many nieces and nephews. He owned the Charles River Press of Boston with his brother Leo. Throughout his working life he was in the printing business, but his proudest professional accomplishment was achieving the rank of Sgt Major in the USMC. At age 17 he joined the United States Marine Corp during World War II, fought in the battle of Bougainville with the Third Marine Division, the capture and occupation of Guam and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also served in Tutuila, Guadalcanal, Eniwetok, New Zealand and other islands in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre. He was active in the USMC reserves from 1947 through 1970 and a member of the 1st Battalion 25th Marines USMCR. He was a former vice president and loyal member of the Top 3 Military Retired Association. Once a Marine, always a Marine. He will be remembered most by his family and friends for his pride in his military service and involvement as Coordinator for Toys for Tots where he was a devoted and tireless advocate since 1965. He will be remembered lovingly by the close circle of friends he has kept since his youth, his dedication to his own family and will always be remembered for his kindness to those in need. He was a very good man who lived a good life and we will miss him. Semper Fi. Funeral from the McDonald Funeral Home, SOUTH WEYMOUTH, at 809 Main St. (Rte 18 opp. South Shore Hospital) Monday at 10:30 am. Funeral Mass to follow in the Immaculate Conception Church, East Weymouth at 11:30. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday 3:00-7:00 pm.
