Mr. James Howard Carter, age 87, of Green Hill Road, Gainesville, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Jon Beck, the Rev. Mike Taylor and the Rev. Swayne Cochran will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the funeral home. Mr. Carter was born in Banks County and was the son of the late Culver Cohen Carter and Myrtle (Hooper) Carter. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, in Africa and Italy. He was a member of New Holland Baptist Church and retired from Miliken in New Holland in 1986. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlene (Clark) Carter; brothers, Billy Carter and J.B. Carter; and son, Stanley Lamar Carter. Mr. Carter is survived by his son, Jimmy Leigh Carter, Gainesville; granddaughter and husband, Nicki and Jon Koppenaal, Duluth; grandson and wife, Dustin Leigh and Haley Carter, Lula; great-grandson, Cohen Joseph Carter, Lula; brother and sister-in-law, George and Cecile Carter, Gainesville; sister, Helen Martin, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Brian Lingerfelt, Gainesville; and a number of other family and friends also survive.
