HALE, James Leo October 4, 1945 - June 12, 2015 Preferably, Jim would have been on the water that perfect summer day, but he had to embark on a different journey. I will honour his very private and unassuming nature by not delving into his considerable accomplishments and the trials he overcame. Instead, I will touch upon his nature. As with all of us, he was not without fault but the good outweighed the bad. Born and raised in Mason City, Ia., he acquired a strong Mid-Western work ethic. Life took a turn in his 30''s and he moved to Naples, Fla. where he developed a great love and respect for the ocean. It was there that serendipity brought us together in 1980. Following his heart, in 1981, he abruptly left his job, flew to Victoria and never looked back - and "they" said it would never last! He immediately embraced my two children as his own and a deep love grew between them. Jim quickly adapted to our Canadian way of life and he burst with pride when he became a citizen. Doors opened such as world travel, filled with hilarious stories. His skills as a fisherman transferred to West Coast waters, first fishing off shore until he was accepted as a member of the Clover Point Anglers Association in 2003. Their 12 foot aluminum boats were a far cry from what he''d been used to, but true to his humble nature that little boat became his yacht and by all accounts, it and his gear were the best looked after at the boat house. He saw many successes there and was generous with his catches. He was a gentle man who cried the first time he witnessed the dying, spawning salmon and it was HIS boat that was encircled once by a pod of orcas, for the better part of an hour and another time by a pod of dolphins. His rapport with nature spilled over to humans. Although Jim tended to be a loner, his outgoing and infectious personality drew people to him. He loved a good story and shared many a laugh over coffee with "the boys". He was a fixture in James Bay and enjoyed nothing better than "shooting the shit" with its many residents and workers. Jim was overly punctual, a good listener, loyal, quick to learn, conscientious, an excellent judge of character, thoughtful and a man who could always be counted upon. Although, physically strong, more important was his inner strength that helped us through the tragic loss of our beloved son, Joshua Miers in 2011. In his own words "for the most part, I have had a most wonderful life". Jim felt strongly about organ donation but due to his illness, only his eyes were viable. Still, two people now have the gift of sight. We extend our heartfelt thanks to his numerous care providers and especially to Hospice for their love and compassion and to all of those who were there and who continue to be there for us - Jim was amazed- we are not. Left bereft are his wife, Susannah Mihail; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Sandy Clark; step-grandson, Tyson Clark (Kim); sister, Marcia (and the late David) Entner, sister, Carolyn (Brent) Hewett; mother-in-law, Jennie Joannides; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tim and Kathy Joannides; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Katina Joannides and David Erlandson and numerous other family members from both sides whom he loved deeply. In memory of Jim and in continuing memory of Josh, donations may be made to The Men''s Trauma Center, 102-1022 Pandora Avenue, Victoria, BC V8V 3P5. At Jim''s request, a small gathering will be held later in the summer at Clover Point, where his ashes will be spread. "He now soars and fishes with the eagles"
