MANCHESTER - James H. Cavanaugh, 84, of Manchester, died March 23, 2013 at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester. Mr. Cavanaugh was born April 15, 1928, in Manchester, the son of John Carl and Mary H. (Egan) Cavanaugh. He attended local schools and graduated from Manchester High School Central in 1946. He earned his B.A. degree from Dartmouth College in 1950. He made the All-State football team in 1946, and was batting champion in 1948 in the Manchester Sunset Baseball League with a .405 average. He was inducted into the Queen City Hall of Fame in 2004. He served with the 357th Aviation Engineers and trained at Fort Drum, N.Y. and Fort Belvoir, Va. Jim was the owner of Cavanaugh Lumber Company. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Cathedral. Members of his family include his wife, Barbara (Faubert) Cavanaugh of Manchester; two sons, John S. Cavanaugh of Bratislava, Slovakia, Joseph S. Cavanaugh of El Dorado, Ark.; two grandchildren, John A. Cavanaugh of Southington, Conn., Mary Kate Cavanaugh of El Dorado, Ark.; a sister, Nancy Elliot of Portsmouth; several nieces and nephews. . services: Calling hours are Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Durning, Bykowski & Young Funeral Home, 285 Manchester St., corner of Beech Street. The funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph Cathedral, Lowell Street. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
