JAMES H. BATES - BURLINGTON - James H. Bates, 90, died at the Green Mountain Nursing Home on April 13, 2012. He was born in Boston, Mass. to the late Merritt and Florence Bates. He graduated from Leavitt Institute in Turner, Maine in 1939 and the University of Maine in 1943. Following three years of service in the Army and Army Air Force during W.W.II, he completed his master's degree at the University of Maine. Jim worked for the Maine Tuberculosis & Health Association from 1948-1951. He then became the Executive Director of the Vermont Tuberculosis and Health Association in 1951. He joined the staff at the Office of the Dean of the UVM College of Medicine in 1958 and completed his career there in 1987. Throughout his long tenure at UVM, Jim was respected for his dedication and integrity, as well as for the support he gave to both colleagues and medical students. Jim's family was the pride of his life. He was a devoted, gentle and caring son, husband, father and grandfather whose countless acts of love shall always be cherished by family members. His humility and his sense of humor helped endear Jim to all who knew him. He is survived by his son, Robert (Joan) of Essex Junction; daughter, Brenda (Stuart Armstrong) of Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren, James Holway (Kerry) of Burlington, David Bates of Essex Junction, Michael Bates (Selvi) of Alexandria, Va., Lora Armstrong of Bristol, UK, and Rebekha Bates of Sarasota, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lora Bates; brother, Paul Bates; son, Brian Bates; and grandson, William Armstrong. Jim's faith and compassion were reflected in his concern for the health and welfare of others. He was active with the Vermont Conference of Social Welfare, the Vermont Sheltered Workshop, the Vermont Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (AHPER), the New England Tuberculosis Conference, The Converse Home of Burlington, the Governor's Committee on Youth Fitness, and the Burlington Public Welfare Commission. The Burlington First Baptist Church was an integral part of his life. Over 60 years of membership, he was actively involved in many different boards at the church. He also participated in a number of state-level boards, including being President of the Vermont Baptist Men for several years. The family would like to thank the staff at the Green Mountain Nursing Home for their care and love over the six years that Jim was a resident there. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Burlington on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. A reception will be held at the church following the service and friends are invited to greet Jim's family at that time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 81 St. Paul Street, Burlington, VT 05401.
