SMITH, James Edwin "Ted" Suddenly, following emergency surgery, on Monday, April 19, 2004 at Scarborough Grace Hospital, in his 93rd year. Husband of Margaret Burns, son of James Smith and Etta Gibbons (all deceased), father of Katharine and James (Cheryl), grandfather of Althea and Michelle Smith, brother of Edith Fensham and "grandpa" to Robin Miller and Ciera and Ryan Gautreau. Ted was born in Southampton, Ontario and achieved distinction in many fields. He served overseas in the Royal Canadian Artillery, and later rose to Lieutenant Colonel and commanding officer of 113 Manning Depot (militia). A career educator, he was a principal; a master at Ottawa Teachers' College; Assistant Superintendent in the Ministry of Education; and co-authored Canada's first "new math" textbooks. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for over 30 years, and led its "Second Century Advance" national campaign. His achievements as a Mason for over 70 years were honoured with the presentation of the William Mercer Wilson Medal. A Memorial Service and reception will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2737 Bayview Ave., Toronto, ON M2L 1C5 (1 block south of Hwy #401) on Saturday, April 24 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Memorial Fund at the above address. (Interment of the cremated remains beside his beloved wife Margaret (nee Burns, originally from Ottawa) will take place Saturday June 5, 1 PM at the cemetery at Norway Bay, Quebec, followed by reception at the family cottage.
