James Edward Williams, 78 CORTLAND, Ohio - James Edward Williams, 78 of Cortland, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 4, 2010, in the St. Joseph Health Center after a courageous battle with COPD. Born October 2, 1931, in Cumberland, Md., James was the son of the late Frank and Marie (Gero) Williams. Jim moved to the Warren area at the age of 10 and attended St. Mary's School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving our country during the Korean War Conflict. After receiving and honorable discharge, Jim began work at Packard Electric until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Cortland Volunteer Fire Department, a constable and one of the first police officers for Bazetta Township. Jim loved to golf and enjoyed spending winters in Florida. Upon his retirement, Jim worked at the Oxbow golf course in LaBelle, Fla., and also the Prestwick golf course in Cortland. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Barbara A. (Madar) Williams of Cortland whom he married Oct. 17, 1953, and with whom he has shared 56 years of marriage; and four children, Carol (Tracy) Steele and Janet (John) Onatz, both of Warren, James A. (Shelly) Williams of Kent, and Lynn (Jerry) Reed of West Hartford, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Jonathan (Aimee) Steele, Josh Smith, Heather Steele, Keri (Jeff) Scheid, James A. (Marlo) Williams Jr., Emma Higginbotham, and Taylor and Zach Reed. He is survived by a sister, Mary Frances Steele of Hubbard and was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Catherine Hinkle. Calling hours were held Wednesday evening at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Don King will conduct a Mass of Christian burial on Thursday, April 8, at the Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will take place in the All Souls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that material contributions be made to Golden Strings, a non-profit organization offering recreational programs to adults with disabilities, at 12 S.
