James E. Keyes, 81, of Farmington died peacefully on Aug. 4, 2008 at Hartford Hospital with his daughters by his side. He was born in Gary, Ind. and was the son of the late Edwin James and Beatrice Mary Harrowell Keyes. His teaching career began at Phillips Exeter Academy but he dedicated 29 years of his life as chairman and teacher at the math department at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford. He devoted most of his time at Kingswood coaching the varsity golf team, soccer team and ski teams. He graduated in 1950 from Yale where he was a member of the Calhoun football team, Chi Psi Fraternity and university track team. He was a loving and quiet soul that will be missed by his surviving daughters Tracey H. Cooper and her husband Rod of Kensington and Kristen K. Littlefield and her husband Jay of Centreville, Va.; a sister, Beatrice Pettingell of Ill.; four grandchildren, Samantha Cooper, Jacqueline Cooper, Alexandra Littlefield and Jake Littlefield. He was predeceased by a brother Richard T. Keyes. Services were held Aug. 7, 2008 at Saint James Episcopal Church, Farmington. A private burial was at the Dennis Village Cemetery, Dennis, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the Kingswood Oxford School, 170 Kingswood Road, West Hartford, CT 06119. Berlin Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
