Griffin - Mr. James Everett Carter, age 82, Griffin, formerly of Athens passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at the Brightmoor Nursing Center.Mr. Carter was born in Pike County on December 26, 1921 to the late Clifton Gerald Carter and the late Opal Shackelford Carter. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Martha Carter and a step son Tim Waldrop of Athens, Georgia. Mr. Carter was retired from Southern Bell with 41 years of service, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II.Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Darlene Vaughn Carter; son, Jim Carter of Jonesboro; daughter and son-in-law, Donna C. and James Szwast of St. Simons; daughter, Janet C. Walker of Athens; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; stepchildren; Keith and Bridgett Waldrop of Griffin, Lane Waldrop of Durango, Colorado; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Floyd Goodrum of Sharpsburg; brother, Wynton Carter of Tampa, Florida; several nieces and nephews.Graveside funeral services for Mr. James Everett Carter will be conducted on Friday, October 22, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Al Shackelford will officiate. Friends may visit the family on Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
