James D. "Don" Edwards, 83, Springfield, passed away in St. John's Hospital on Dec. 27, 2006, following a brief illness. Don was born as the only child of Maggie and Jim Edwards on Aug. 1, 1923, and married Herma Doty on Oct. 29, 1943. Don was preceded in death by one of his daughters, Barbara Kay Brake, in 1982, and one great-grandson. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Herma Edwards, and one daughter, Jane Ann Hancock and her husband Bob. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Todd and Scott Brake, and Lynn Brake Humaker, and seven great-grandchildren. Don served in the U.S. Air Force from December 1943 to December 1945, where he trained as a radio operator. He began working in the Galena Post Office as a clerk on Aug. 1, 1946, and then served as the Galena Postmaster for 34 years until his retirement on Aug. 1, 1985. He lived in Galena all of his life until relocating to Springfield in February 1992. Don enjoyed gardening and working in his yard immensely. His yard and garden were always well-manicured as well as productive enough to share garden vegetables with many friends and neighbors. He was an active member of the Mission Hills Church of Christ in Springfield, Missouri. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband and father. A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, in Mission Hills Church of Christ in Springfield. The funeral will follow immediately at 2 p.m. in the church, with Ronny Wade officiating. The Mission Hills Church of Christ is located on the corner of Bellhurst and Galloway next to fire station, east of Primrose Marketplace. Turn into Primrose Marketplace shopping center on South Glenstone and continue southeast on that street.
