->WINSLOW -- James Clifford Powell, 82, of Winslow, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at his home with his family by his side.He was born May 20, 1926, in East Liverpool, Ohio, the son of James and Mildred (Perry) Powell. James had five brothers, Ernest, Jasper, William, J. Thomas and Joe; and four sisters, Ruth, Donna, Margaret and Dorothy.James proposed to Myra Evelyn Dyer at Johnson Pond of Colby College after a three-year chaperoned courtship. During that time, James would hitchhike to Maine from Lakehurst, N.J., to see Myra on the weekends. They later married on Aug. 20, 1950, at her mother's home in Winslow. Their love was truly an inspiration to all the lives they touched -- filled with passion, devotion, friendship and laughter. James described his love for Myra as "It's more than love; it's a being." Their love was sweet and playful, tender and soulful. They never parted without a kiss É whether it was to the post office, a ride in town or a walk to the garden. He joined the Navy in April 1944 and saw action in the Pacific theater.A career Navy man, he served from April 1944 to July 1968, retiring as a chief boatswain mate. Some of his duty assignments were LCT-1395 Pacific Fleet; LSM-398 Little Creek, Va., USS Thuban AKA-19 Atlantic Fleet; Naval Communications Station Sidi Yahia, Morocco; and Naval Security Group Activity, Fort Meade, Md. During his service, he received the Navy Good Conduct Medal six times, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal twice. Upon his retirement, Chief Powell worked for a short time with the Maine Department of Transportation before earning his general educational development certificate and joining the Scott Paper Mill in Winslow in 1969. He was employed by the Scott Paper Co. until a heart attack in August 1986. James was a member of American Legion Post 5 and the Fleet Reserve Association. His zest for life found him tending to his gardens in his cut-off jeans and white T-shirt, leaving his skin kissed from the summer sun. James' love of the ocean has threaded serenity in the sea throughout his family. His naval career carried his adventures all over the world, yet his favorite location was the quaint little town of Winter Harbor. He and Myra shared many adventures together including their motorcycle rides on old country backroads, sharing picnic lunches and summer nights "round a campfire." He loved his popcorn with peanuts while watching "the ballgame" or the Grand Ole Opry in the breezeway. His grandchildren lit up his life, as he did theirs. "Granddad" was a natural teacher; nonjudgmental, softspoken and very proud. He taught them to fish, swing an ax and throw a fastball. Some of his fondest memories were of coaching his granddaughter Sara's softball team, and he cherished his red-and-white sweatshirt that read "Coach." He was there for life's milestones as well as the tiny moments along the way: his granddaughter Liz's wedding in Hawaii, school concerts and plays, dance recitals and karate tournaments, graduations and proms, camping trips and sporting events, building forts out of blankets, wrestling in the living room, and shooting pool in the basement; and, during his last months, having the opportunity to laugh and play with his great-grandchildren; creating lasting memories for all.James brought joy to life every day through his stories, his funny faces and his sense of humor. He was known for his strength, easygoing nature and devotion to his family. There is no doubt his legacy will live on among the lives he has touched. James is survived by his wife, Myra; a son, Raymond T. Powell and his wife, Mila, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Patricia A.
