Born in 1948 in Columbus, GA, James was the only child born to the union ofJoe and Gladys Carter. He was raised by his grandparents James and Latha Mahone.He was a 1966 graduate and senior class president of Carver High School in Columbus,GA. James went on to attend Tuskegee University where he was a member of thefootball team, gymnastics team, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He graduated in1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and received his Masterof Education degree in Administration & Supervision in 1971. He remained a dedicatedTuskegee University alumnus his entire life.During his professional career, James was employed by the Macon County, AlabamaSchool System as an Education Specialist Assistant Principal, and Special ProgramsAdministrator. He later served as Uniserv Director and Executive Director of Statewide FieldServices with the Alabama Education Association. He retired in 2001.James welcomed the Lord into his life at an early age at Pitts Chapel AME Church,Midland, GA. He was a member of Bowen UMC, Tuskegee, AL for many years beforetransferring his membership to Metropolitan UMC. There he served and worshipped untilhe was called home.He is survived by his wife, Deloris Dobbs Carter; daughter, LaClaire (Robert) CarterDouglass, Birmingham, AL; aunt, Lillian McGhee, Columbus, GA, and great uncle, WillieLewis, Birmingham, AL; beloved cousins, Carolyn (Douglas) Miller, Jonesboro, GA;Jaqueline (Gregory) Battle, Union Grove, AL; and Herman Lewis, Sr., Columbus, GA;mother-in-Iaw, Myrtle Dobbs; brother-in-law, Charles Dobbs, Jr.; sister-in-law, DelDobbs; all of Detroit, MI; sister-in-law, LaQuita Dobbs Dukes, Palmdale, CA; and a hostof nieces, nephews, and cousins from the Lewis, Mahone, Carter and Dobbs families.Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 9:00 am at theMetropolitan United Methodist Church, 3108 Rosa Parks Ave., Montgomery, AL, withRev. John E. Brooks, officiating. His life will also be celebrated at 2:00 pm EST at PittsChapel AME Church, 7501 Lynch Rd., Midland, GA. Interment will follow in the GreenAcres Cemetery, Columbus, GA, with People's Funeral Service of Columbus andMcKenzie's Funeral Home Staff, Tuskegee, AL, directing. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity willperform their memorial service on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 5:30 pm at McKenzie'sFuneral Home Chapel, followed by a family hour from 6:00-7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers,the family request memorial contributions be made to Tuskegee University in Mr.Carter's honor.
