JAMES C. DAVIS1918-2007James C. Davis, age 88, died at 12:15 a.m., Saturday, February 17, 2007 at a local hospital in Pensacola. He was a native of Brewton, AL and had lived in Pensacola since 1945.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Robbinson Davis; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Scott Ready of Grand Lake, CO; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Lee Davis of Pensacola; four grandchildren, Zez and Wendy Ready of Grand Lake, CO, Arnie (Ashley) Townley and Tanya Davis Pettis of Pensacola; and also two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel Ryals, Myrtle and Swede Danielson, Lena and Corry R. Dickson, all of Pensacola, and Lucille and Ray Bagley of Pace, along with a brother, Claude L. Davis of Pensacola.Mr. Davis served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded a purple heart with cluster. He was a longtime member of the Pensacola Civitan Club, a member of East Hill Masonic Lodge 310, the Yorkrite Masonic Bodies, Hadji Shrine, National Sojourners Lodge 460, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Pensacola.Mr. Davis retired as Chief of the Pensacola Police Department in 1980 after 35 years of service in that department. He was an early advocate of formal education for law enforcement officers of all ranks. He considered higher education a basic and necessary building block of true police professionalism and set the example by returning to school as an adult, where he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree. He was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.Mr. Davis was a dedicated Christian and deacon at East Hill Baptist Church for many years and then became a member of Olive Baptist Church. He strongly believed that faithful tithing and support of worldwide missionary activity are essential ingredients of a complete Christian life.Visitation and viewing will be at 11 a.m. with services to follow at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21st, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, 1000 Highway 29 South, Cantonment, led by Dr. Ted Traylor. Burial will follow in the Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery.Pallbearers will be uniform police, and honorary pallbearers will be retired law enforcement officers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Olive Baptist Church or your favorite charity.FAITH CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME NORTH, 1000 Highway 29 South, Cantonment, is in charge of arrangements.
