HORTON--James Bawden, (1930-2014). Jim, beloved husband of Ines, father of Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Christiana, and grandfather of Nicole, passed away on June 29 at age 84. Jim had a varied and distinguished career as a magazine executive, turning troubled magazines into successful and profitable icons of their decades. He graduated from Brooklyn Friends School (1946) and Columbia College (1950) and earned his MBA from NYU (1960). He spent his early career at the Wall Street Journal, Curtis Publishing Company, and Young & Rubicam. Jim combined his belief that a magazine's mission is to teach and inspire with a keen business sense. As Vice President of CRM, Inc. and general manager of its magazine publishing division (1969-73) he turned Psychology Today from a losing operation into a highly profitable magazine, and also launched Intellectual Digest. He was general manager of Dow Jones' National Observer (1975-76) and group Vice President for business affairs at Playboy Enterprises (1976-78), where he launched Food & Wine magazine. As president and CEO of HAL Publications (1980-86) he took Working Woman from bankruptcy to one of America's "hottest" magazines, as recognized by AdWeek in both 1982 and 1983, and acquired Success! magazine. Generous with his knowledge, he was an adjunct professor of publishing at NYU (1980-86). He was a member of Ex-Members of Squadron A, Veteran Corps of Artillery, Sigma Chi (a Significant Sig), and the University Club. Jim did everything with style and a fresh boutonniere in his lapel. He loved New York for its jazz clubs of the 1950s, Orpheus at Carnegie Hall, opera and ballet at Lincoln Center; he loved Mozart and Gilbert & Sullivan; he admired the ancient Greeks and the classics. He created a magical childhood for his children, with Oz stories and summers on the Massachusetts farm, evenings on the lawn at Tanglewood, visits to Disneyland, and road trips exploring the wonders of the West. Jim faced many physical challenges in his final years, yet always managed the sweetest of smiles. He was gentle, funny, kind, and a talented storyteller. A celebration of his life will be held on September 18 at 6pm, at Trinity Baptist Church, 250 E. 61st Street, New York, NY.
