James Albert Gunter passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, from a prolonged illness. James was born to Johnny Goodman Gunter and Mary Blanch Gunter in Jackson, Miss. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 until 1952 during the Korean War. James received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and his master's degree from Florida State University. James taught at Port St. Joe High School for 38 years, from 1956 to 1994. James was a member and attended First United Methodist Church for many years. James enjoyed golf, scoring a hole-in-one on July 10, 1996. James is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eunice; and daughter, Lila of Atlanta. Funeral services for Mr. Gunter will begin at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Port St. Joe with the Rev. Mack Fulcher officiating. Active pallbearers are Jerry Stokoe, Bill Thomas, Harry Lee Smith, Cliff Sanborn, Vic Laferle, Ed Creamer, Jim Belin and Bobby Woodham. Entombment will follow in Holly Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today, Oct. 13, 2009, at the church. A special thank you goes out to Covenant Hospice for making his final time on this Earth as comfortable as possible. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in James' memory to First United Methodist Church and Covenant Hospice.
