Birmingham, AL - Jack Thomas ìJayî Smith, III, age 34, of Birmingham, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15th, at South Highland Presbyterian Church with burial at Ridoutís Southern Heritage Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ridoutís Valley Chapel in Homewood. Jay was a loving husband, a devoted son and brother, and a loyal friend. His most enjoyable times were spent with his wife, Caroline, and his family and friends. He was an award-winning sales representative of Protection One Security. Jay was an avid fan of Formula 1 Racing, and followed the world tour through the media. One of his favorite activities was an annual trip to the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis with his family and friends. It is said that the measure of a person is how he treats his fellow man and how he relates to animals. Jay was a kind and thoughtful man, as attested to by his many friends. He loved all animals, especially his cat ìLuvî and his dog, ìCallie.î With the unusual sixth sense that animals appear to have, they too mourn his passing. Jay is survived by his wife, Caroline Cofer Smith of Birmingham; parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jack T. Smith, Jr. of Birmingham; sister, JoAnna (Glen) Merchant of Birmingham; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Randall & Carol Cofer of Watkinsville, Georgia; grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Smith of Florence, Alabama; aunt, Ms. Janet E. Stovall of Birmingham; two uncles, Lethel L. Smith of Florence, Alabama and Alfred H. Stovall, Jr. of Birmingham. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
