He attended Sacred Heart Parish school and Seton Hall Prep, South Orange. He was a 1969 graduate of Newark State College, where he met his wife, Kay Valauri, in 1966. While working days as an investigator in the Essex County Prosecutor's office, he attended Seton Hall Law School, graduating with his J.D. in 1974. Judge McCormack began in private practice in 1974 as a partner in McGlynn, McGlynn and McCormack, Newark. He continued in various partnerships of his private practice until December 2001, when he was appointed to the State Superior Court, Essex Vicinage. During his tenure, Judge McCormack served in the criminal, civil and family divisions. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Judge McCormack's professional career included one term as Essex County Freeholder, counsel to the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders (1978 to 1992), and counsel to the Essex County Transition Team responsible for drafting the initial Administrative Code of Essex County and the By-Laws of The Board of Chosen Freeholders. He was president of the County Freeholders Counsels' Association; trustee of the N.J. Institute of Municipal Attorneys, member of the N.J. Always proud of his Irish heritage, Judge McCormack served as counsel to the Newark St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee for 10 years, as well as to the West Orange Parade Committee. He was honored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Oranges as The Young Irishman of the Year in 1980. He held memberships in various Irish organizations including The Order of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore, established by his brother, George, in 1991. Though basketball was his passion, he was a member of Essex Fells Country Club for many years, where he attempted to perfect his golf game in good humor, but succeeded in perfecting many friendships instead. Predeceased by his parents, Catherine (Murphy) and William McCormack, and his brother, George, Judge McCormack is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kay, of Roseland, N.J.; his daughter, Melissa, of New York City and his son, Michael, of Caldwell, N.J. He leaves also sisters, Maureen (John) Anstiss of Belmar, N.J., Margo of Essex Fells, N.J., and brother, Joe (Karen) of West Caldwell, N.J.; nieces, Stacy McCormack of Hamilton, N.J., Jessica (Roger) Freda, and grandniece, Cate, of Roseland, N.J., and Tara McCormack of Arizona, and nephew, Brian, of West Caldwell, N.J. There are many relatives, professional associates and life-long friends who have shared a laugh and a story with Timmy and so, therefore, there are many now whose hearts are aching. He was the best of everything to those who knew and loved him! The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to Seton Hall Preparatory School in Memory of Thomas "Timmy" M.
