SMITH, JOAN STEVENSON Joan Stevenson Smith, 83, of Vestavia Hills, AL passed away peacefully on October 26, 2012. Preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, Carl G. Smith, Joan was a life-long resident of Birmingham. Services will be held on Tuesday, October 30th, at 1:30 pm in St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 2061 Patton Chapel Road, Birmingham, AL 35216, followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday, October 29th, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road in Homewood. Joan attended the University of Alabama, where she studied design. Though the years, she was a member of many local organizations. The Smiths were charter members of The Club in Birmingham. Throughout her life, Joan loved to entertain at her Vestavia Hills home, with Christmas her favorite time of year. Her keen sense of humor was a joy to all who knew her. Joan valued family above all else in her life, and is survived by many whom she held dear. Those include Carl's daughter, Carla Coleman and her husband Tom of Pompano Beach, FL; niece Martha Gaines Forsyth, and nephews Drew Gaines, Rick Gaines and his wife Lesley, all of Lighthouse Point, FL. After losing her mother to breast cancer as a child, Joan and her late sister Sarah (Tweet) were raised by her maternal aunt Chi Chi Dollar of Birmingham, creating a vast extended family that survives today. Those include John Dollar and his wife Janet of Natchitoches, LA; Jimmy Dollar of Tulsa, OK; Mary Lou Cronk and her husband Jeff of Tulsa, OK; Joani George and her husband Mark of Washington, New Jersey; Chris Dollar of Austin, TX; Pattea Carpenter and Bonnie Lloyd of Louisville, CO; Kenneth (Buz) Carpenter of Sierra Vista, AZ; and Margot Carpenter and her husband Robert Murphy of New York, NY. Additional generations of great nieces and great-great nieces and nephews round out the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Joan's memory be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. >
