JOAN SHIRLEY SMITH (BAILIE) Born Joan Shirley Kearns on February 14, 1933 and passed away at Hospice Simcoe on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the age of 79. Shirley had a such a positive attitude about life despite having carried more than her fair share of burdens. Early in life mental illness caused a marriage breakdown and forced her to raise 5 children on her own. Despite the challenges all of her kids had great, memorable childhoods filled with love. Shirley was forced to face the death of both her first and second husbands in mid-life and to face a parent's worst nightmare. In 2003 and 2009 Shirley faced the loss of two of her children to cancer, a disease which ultimately took her own life. Shirley is survived by her daughter Laura Ashdown, sons Mike and David Bailie, grandchildren Shae Bailie, Christopher Ashdown, Christopher George, Suzanne Ashdown, Jamie Bailie, Karolyn George, Robbie Ashdown, Lexi Bailie, Acelyne Bailie and Leviathan Bailie. Shirley is predeceased by her daughters Donna Ashdown and Dorothey George and her first and second husbands Reid Bailie and Jack Smith. The family is grateful to all of the staff at Hospice Simcoe for their kind and caring support in her final days. Friends and family may visit at the Innisfil Funeral Home at 7910 Yonge St. in Stroud, Ontario on Friday, July 6th from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A viewing will be held on Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with a service to follow.
