BRUNSWICK - Jeanne Louise (Patten) Whitten died unexpectedly June 29, 2012, at Midcoast Hospital, three weeks before her 91st birthday. She was a resident of the Highlands, Topsham. She was born July 20, 1921, in Philadelphia, daughter of Helen E. (Patten) and Dr. Clarence A. Patten. She received her elementary education in Philadelphia public schools and at Lankenau School. After her father's death, the family returned to the family's ancestral Hampden Highlands home, where she graduated from Hampden Academy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Maine where she was a Delta Delta Delta sorority member. During the war she worked at the Army Map Service, Washington, D.C. She taught school in numerous Maine schools, including Garland Street Junior High School, Bangor, where she retired from teaching in 1981. She was active in several educational associations and Hampden Historical Society. She loved the great outdoors in Maine, especially walking, climbing Mount Katahdin, and camping and hiking at Daicey Pond. Literature was always a pleasurable agenda. Her brother, Morton C. Patten, predeceased her in 2000. She was also predeceased by Hank Cameron, her long time good friend. Surviving are her brother, Robert Patten and wife, Stella, of Topsham; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Patten of Damariscotta. Also surviving are two nieces, Dr. Deborah Patten of Bath and Lisa Patten of Alameda, Calif.; nephew, James Patten of Newcastle; and two great-nephews, Nicholas and Benjamin Mesrobian. Per her request, there will be no services. Her remains have been cremated and later this summer, there will be a private family gathering in remembrance of Jeanne. Contributions in her memory are welcome and appreciated to Hampden Historical Society, P.O. Box 456, Hampden, ME 04444; and Baxter State Park, 64 Balsam Drive, Millinocket, ME 04462-2190.
